Kevin-photographing.jpgHi There. I'm Kevin Kubota. When we surround ourselves with amazing, inspirational people, we are driven to become amazing ourselves. We are all "Action Heroes" inside, but we may need a little encouragement to tap our super powers. While "Action Hero" is a metaphor for any Smart and Sassy Photoshop guru who uses Photoshop Actions to power through their workflow and supercharge their images – the True Action Hero is a deeper thinker. Does your photo studio need a little...or a big, boost?

I hear some amazing success stories from or past Digital Photography Bootcamp® attendees and it's one of the main things that I look forward to in the spring and the fall - along with the warm weather and changing colors. Sometimes I don't realize what a difference the workshop has made until months, or even years later when I hear the stories in passing at a convention or via an unrelated email.

Ticia Mangino, a past Bootcamper, sent me this great note yesterday and it almost brought me to tears!

"I have had so much growth in so many areas because of bootcamp, business wise, personally, as an artist. The year after bootcamp I applied as much as I could and ended up with triple the business I had the year before, no kidding. I had 7 weddings the year before and last year I had 18...I had 6 seniors the year before and this year I had almost 40! One of the most important things I think I learned is the importance of a good workflow and the importance of being true to my own artistic style and vision. But there was so much that I took away from Bootcamp that I could go on for days :) As I have said many many times the friendships that I gained have been the most priceless things to me. :)"

Alyssa Flaten, another past Bootcamper, talked to me on the phone and had this amazing story of increasing her business not 5, 10, or even 20 X, but over 30 times. Listen to her own words...

Digital Photography Bootcamp® is coming up next month, May 16-21, and it's going to be another awesome program. My special guests will be the amazingly talented and creative Craig Strong, inventor of the LensBaby, and fabulous portrait artist Vicki Taufer. Both are genuine teachers with invaluable ideas, creativity, and experience to share. I am very proud and excited to have them giving back to our Bootcampers.

I hope to see you at Bootcamp, and hear your  success story. Get more info here.

PMA 2010 Workshop notes for attendees

Thanks to all who attended my Lightroom Professional Workflow hands-on session at PMA. I apologize that they ran out of chairs for everyone to sit on! It was really exciting to see what PMA has done with their convention - with more of a focus on professional level photography education. I wish I had had more time to peruse the tradeshow floor, but it was a quick in-and-out for me.

The notes from the session are available for download here. You'll need the private password I gave you at the workshop to be able to download or open the notes. If you were there, your feedback is welcomed!

Success could be under our noses.

I had an interesting email today from an attendee to one of my workshops. She remembered me talking about how telling stories with your images can be very powerful and instrumental in connecting with your clients, adding deeper value to the images, and ultimately giving them good reason to add them to their personal collections! She admitted that she didn't think she could do that and the thought of it made her a little uncomfortable. Recently, however, she had a client come and sit with her and after looking through the work she told her how she "loved how she told stories in her images." She realized she had been telling stories, but didn't even look at it that way!

For her, it is now a simple matter of learning to express, in words, what she saw and captured. I think our words can bring deeper meaning to our images and it really helps solidify the story for those who maybe "don't get it" right up front. Often there are hidden stories behind the images that really need to be told - then the image makes so much more sense or has more intimate value.

Think about this: when you look at an image in a magazine or book, aren't you compelled to look at the caption to find out more? I have actually played a game with myself, trying to look through photo books and not read the captions. It's hard! I really feel like I'm missing out on something and once I do read the caption I like the image even more!

How are you captioning your images? Do you have captions and stories on your website, blog? Do you tell the stories behind the images when you show them in albums and slide shows in your studio?

This image was taken in Italy, just outside the grand gates surrounding the Boboli Gardens in Florence . I was sitting on the steps, enjoying the setting sun and I noticed this elder man, distinguishably dressed, yet obviously alone and worn through the years. He shuffled his feet through the pigeons, and stopped facing the wall - seeming to reflect on the fact the he was "Once A King". The crowned lion behind him sent the message to me immediately and it has become one of my personal favorites.

I hope that you will join me on one of my Italy workshops in the future too! It is a life-changing experience.

Thanks to everyone who attended my program, Lightspeed Workflow & Sales, at the DWF convention in Nashville! You were a great group and I really had fun :-) Thanks for the dance party at the end of the program too! As promised, here are the complete notes for the session as well as the other free goodies I talked about. If you are also looking for the job management software, a link to download it is on the last page of the PDF file. Don't forget, you'll need the password I gave you at the seminar to download and open the files. Happy workflowing!

Bootcamp Photo Shoot

Yesterday we photographed Lauren & Ben as our lovely couple. I photographed their wedding a few years ago and since then Ben has become an amazing photographer and an inspiration to me in many ways. They graciously allow me to make examples of them at Bootcamp :-)

Last week while I was speaking at PartnerCon in New Orleans, I came across this cool umbrella in a gift shop and grabbed it for a prop. We used it here as it fit the environment perfectly - and of course having an umbrella keeps the rain from coming!

A few of the shots were done with my Lensbaby Composer with the wide angle adapter on it. I love the feel of this lens.

We had to squeeze in a Laying Down Game photo!
